About John Reid

Background – why choose me

I have had a blessed career in racing, working for some of the top stables in the world. Born In Ulster, Northern Ireland in 1955 I have enjoyed respect from my peers and the racing public, with more than 2,500 race wins to my name, of which 49 were Group Championships. I have ridden winners in 14 different countries, and maintain to this day a reputation for professionalism.

Like many successful Irish jockeys my passion for horses was evident at an early age: from the moment I could walk they were my one and only interest. By the age of 16 John I had left the family farm for my first job in a racing stable. At 17 I moved from Ireland to England and by the following year had won my first race.

My big break came winning the King George & Queen Elizabeth Diamond stakes on Ile de Bourbon in 1978 for Fulke Johnston-Houghton. My first Classic victory followed in 1982 riding On The House in the 1,000 Guineas for Harry Wragg. The 1980s saw me well established at the top of the pile, with two more big wins in 1987 on Sir Harry Lewis in the Irish Derby for Barry Hills and on Lady Bentley in the Italian Oaks for Lester Piggott. In 1988 I won Prix de l’Arc on Tony Bin; and in the same year started the first of three seasons at Ballydoyle, as stable jockey for the legendary Robert Sangster/Vincent O'Brien combination.

1992 was possibly the year that most people recall with my win in the Derby on Dr. Devious. From 1997, I rode to for Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation, winning on Swain, Halling and Medaaly and taking a fourth UK Classic on Nedawi in the 1998 St. Leger.

I worked closely with the JA (now the Professional Jockeys’ Association), for many years and was joint President for eight years. In 1995 I received an MBE from the Queen. Since retiring from race riding in 2001 I have worked for At The Races as a pundit and managed the horses belonging to Mike Dawson and George Ward. My interest in bloodstock is still keen: you will often see me at the Sales buying foals to sell on as yearlings, or looking for special horses for interested individuals. I have also recently become Brand Ambassador for Sportingbet.com.

Case Studies

Mike Dawson
I have managed horses for owner Mike Dawson since 2000 whose horse Mine won three Bunbury Cups, a Victoria Cup and a Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. I also purchased Strawberry Dale for him that went onto win five races including a listed and a Group 3. Our best year numerically was 14 wins from 20 horses.

George Ward
I assisted George Ward establish his training yard at Compton, which was mostly jumpers, and achieved while I was there his best ever total of winners.

At the Races
I also acted as a pundit for Sky’s ‘At The Races’ whilst acting as a bloodstock advisor and consultant for a number of other owners who through my guidance and experience have all achieved high levels of success.

John Gosden
“I have known John Reid for many years; he rode Mashaallah to victory for me in the Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Baden in 1992. Not only was he a top class rider but he also won every big race Europe had to offer, including the 1988 Arc on Tony Bin, 1992 Derby on Dr Devious and two King George’s on Il De Bourbon and Swain. John is a thoroughly honest and straightforward man who through, his knowledge of the racing industry, will be a massive help to anyone who is considering venturing in to racehorse ownership.”

Sir Michael Stoute
“John Reid rode many winners for my stable including the 1995 Irish Oaks on Pure Grain. John was a top class rider and the consummate professional. He is a very personable man and struck up a good rapport with all of my owners. He has a good all-round grasp of the bloodstock industry and is a man of integrity.”
